How to Pick Your Next Water PipeMichael Claisse
There’s no shortage of water pipe options on the market today. If you’re accustomed to rolling your product, or simply a different type of device altogether, the prospect of choosing the right piece can be overwhelming. There are (quite literally) thousands of options. By taking a few minutes to consider what you need from your next piece, sorting the ‘must haves’ from the ‘maybe laters’ doesn’t have to be such a daunting task. Here, we’re going to look at a few of the most important aspects of choosing your next water pipe.
Dry Hemp Herb? or Concentrate?
The good news is that water pipes can work with both dry herb and herbal concentrates from hemp plants. But, you will need to tailor your choice of pipe to which version of the product you will be smoking.
Dry herbs generally require a standard bowl and stem, sitting at a 45 or 90-degree angle. On the other hand, for using concentrates, you’ll need a special “dab nail” with a 90-degree stem. For instance, something like the NEU Concentrate Rig Pyramid is perfect for use with concentrates. However, there’s also an option for those looking to switch back and forth. Many small-to-medium-sized glass water pipes feature quartz banger attachments — a piece that allows you to switch back and forth between both capabilities.
To Perc or Not to Perc?
Many water pipes feature something called a ‘percolator’. To the unindoctrinated, a percolator filters your smoke through a reservoir of water. In doing so, the smoke is significantly cooled, and made to be much more ‘smooth’. Some water pipes, like the Tsunami Apple Double Donut Showerhead, may have multiple percolators, and yes — each one does make for a smoother experience. The more percolators, the smoother! But, there is a caveat. With each percolator, drag is increased within the pipe. This means that more force will be needed to actually inhale the smoke. If you’re a new user or just want to go easy on the lungs, this might be something to consider.
Big or Small?
This is pretty important. The way you use your water pipe is going to determine what you should look for, where size is concerned.
Of course, the larger pieces are much more impressive to look at, but they might not be right for you. If you’re looking to travel with your water pipe, going for the biggest-and-baddest might not be our suggestion! On the other hand, if you’re looking for something to keep at home, where it won’t often get jostled around, maybe it’s time to make that investment!
Another thing to keep in mind — the larger the water pipe, the more smoke you’ll likely get. If you’re a new or casual smoker, we’d suggest going for something more small or medium-sized.
Get What You Need
All in all, there’s no ‘best’ water pipe, but there’s certainly a best option for you. By carefully considering what you need from your next water pipe or rig, you can make the investment for what you need. Take time, be patient, and feel free to ask questions! It’s a big decision, and we want you to make the right call.
